GARMIN AIR UK INSTALL FOR IDIOTS
Alex H:
You could also use the Garmin Mapsource software that came with the GPS to upload the Airmap files. The Readme.txt file that comes with the airmaps describes how to do this. Only slight complication is it requires a bit of fiddling with Windows registry entries. One thing I found was that this method doesn't seem work with the latest version 6.14 of MapSource for some reason but works fine with version 6.13. I think Mapsource makes it a bit easier to see what you are loading because you get a graphic display of the maps rather than just a list of their names. Also if you have road maps and other stuff you can save the various maps as a package in Mapsource which makes it easier to reload everything as one package if you change something.
Cheers,

After recently receiving my Garmin GPSMAP 76 the next job was to upload the airmaps and as I have only been using a PC for 7months this was a problem that I was going to need help with but never the less thought i'd have a go myself and follow the simple(not for me)instructions on paragliding forum. After many hours sitting infront of my PC cursing and pulling my hair out I finally managed it although I now find it necessary to write the following instructions that are suitable for all 'banjo' players like myself:-
Firstly you must install driver software for your USB lead or serial converter(EASY)
Download airmaps into your PC:- This is done by going to http://ukgarminairmap.wikispaces.com ,this is a regularily updated site that will contain your airmaps.
Next left click 'Latest Files' under 'What's new.......', and then left click either GARMINAIRUK.zip(which is the one I did) or GARMINAIRUKT.zip(the 'T' at the end stands for transparent, meaning that you will also be able to see the roads through the airmap, this would probably make the screen too confusing and that's the reason why I didn't bother using this one).
Next left click on 'Open' in the File Download and then left click on 'Allow'
Then left click on 'Extract all files' (which you will see directly above the new file you have just downloaded)
Now delete what is already highlighted in blue in the 'Browse' box, and replace it with C:\Garmin\Airspace(that's what I used) and then click 'Extract'
WELL DONE YOU HAVE JUST COMPLETED YOUR AIRMAP DOWNLOAD TO PC.
This information now needs to be put into a different file for your GPS to understand it, and this is done by going to http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mdipol/img2gps .You will now see 'Download IMG2GPS v2.81(installer)' written in blue or purple in the top left hand side ,so left click this, wait and then left click 'Run',wait and then left click 'allow', then left click 'next', then 'next' again, and then I ticked the box 'Create a desktop icon' under the heading 'Additional icons' before left clicking 'Next' ,wait then left click 'install' and then left click 'Finish'.
You should now have an icon of the earth with 'Img2gps v2.81 by....' written in a box at the bottom of the screen.Left click on this to get it on your screen if it isn't already there, and then left click on 'Load Folder' in the top left hand side, you should now have your 6img's and Airspace.img list on your screen, if not then double left click on 'Airspace', then double left click on 'GARMINAIRUK' and now you should have it.
Now you need to double left click on any of the 7 img's(including Airspace.img) and you should now have img's 1 to 6 and Airspace.img displayed on the IM2GPS v2.81.
Now move your mouse arrow over to the small boxes immediately to the left of all the img's and left click once in all boxes for a small blue tick to appear in each one.
WELL DONE YOU'RE NOW READY TO UPLOAD THE DATA INTO YOUR NEW GARMIN GPSMAP.
Connect your Garmin to your PC(I had to purchase a USB Serial Converter in order for me to do this as I bought mine on e-bay from the USA, which then meant that I also had to install the driver software for this which I had already performed before commencing any of the above, you may be OK though).
Now left click 'Upload to GPS' which is now highlighted on the bottom right hand side of the IMG2GPS v2.81 screen.
Your GPS screen should now be showing that it is receiving data, this should only take a minute if you're uploading 'GARMINAIRUK.zip' ,it'll obviously take longer the more you upload. If you endure problems with this then alter the 'I/O Port' settings below the 'Load Folder' that you clicked earlier.
WELL DONE NOW YOU'RE READY FOR THE FUN BIT ,UNDERSTANDING HOW TO USE IT.
This worked for me first time once I had sorted out what to do and I can't see why it shouldn't work first time for you, I am now looking forward to uploading any amendments that are made to the existing airmaps as it is very simple. You must also remember that if you intend uploading road maps all of this should be carried out as a single download because if it isn't you could wipe out the existing information(your airmaps) meaning you'll have to start all over again.
Good Luck Andy H.
