Hi John,
Bought a pair last year as they seemed really good value. Will bring them with me next time I'm out in case any newly qualified pilots might want to borrow one. Mine didn't come with a headset as far as I remember but presumambly, most headphones with the correct plug will work okay.

Thanks for the useful set up information.

Our Club has purchased radios for use, primarily, by the Club Coaches to help recent CPs.

These radios are PMR radios and have a range of about 5km in clear air.

They will not transmit or receive on the 143.7 frequency that the club uses but on a totally separate frequency. They have the advantage that they are legal to use from the ground (but NOT from the air).

The intention is that they are used to communicate information to newly qualified Club Pilots who may not as yet have purchased a radio (they will be issued & returned on a daily basis). Whilst they are two way radios they will not be fitted with headsets and there is no intention that those being coached will use them to transmit from the air. (As newly qualified pilots they have enough to worry about!)

As Coaches we are required to work with visiting pilots and the radios will be made available to visitors, but Club Members will take priority.
The radios are PMR radios with 8 channels and 38 sub channels (CTCSS) Set out below are the settings we will be using:
  • The channel the SWWSC use is Channel 6 - Sub Channel 9 (see picture below)
  • Voice Activated Transmission (Vox) ? set to OFF (other wise you may be transmitting wind noise)
  • Call Tones ? set to OFF
  • Automatic Power Off (APO) - set to OFF
  • Roger Beep ? set to OFF
  • Baby monitoring function - OFF
Once set up it is best to use the ?lock? function (assuming the radio has one)to keep the settings.

If any members wish to purchase these radios for themselves, it would be good if you could set them up the same ? this assumes you want to be on the same channel! (Note: not all radios will have all functions)

If you are considering purchasing these, the 38 sub channels and CTCSS is very important for us all to be able to communicate with each other. Lidl are currently selling a reasonably good set for £24.99 (that?s for a pair including charger ? much cheaper the 2m radios we currently use at around £140 each.)

If you are planning to purchase your own or want information on headsets etc. let me know by PM E-mail or mobilly and I?ll be happy to help.
