Steve Watkins

Chairman

Hello :) I undertook my training with Nick Bambers & Paul Williams of Paraventure. My mate Gaz got me into the sport after spending countless hours listening to his antics which sounded amazingI My first wing was the Advance Alpha 3 (DHV1) but have now upgraded now to a Gradient Aspen 3 (EN C) I successfully passed my Pilot's examination 2009. I have flown in Slovenia, Italy, Bulgaria, Algodonales, Organya, Italy, Annecy & lots of Wales home flying and am an active participant in the BCC. 2015 has been a good year for me with a personal best of 60km in the UK and a personal best International of 87km. Recently upgraded to a Pod harness and I wish I'd done it years ago!

Other interests include Ufology, Web Design/Admin, Mountain Biking & looking after my kids who are very demanding at the moment and are all in school and college.

I trained as an electrican with Swalec but then move to the NHS as a maintenance electrician, I then move up the ladder and I'm now responsible for the engineering services in Powys NHS. Luckily I still manage to get some flying in between all the meetings I attend!

I've been computer mad since a young age and have always been comfortable around technology. I had a bulletin board or BBS as some may remember when I was 14. The internet came into fruition around that time with AOL leading the market.

Nick Roberts

Membership Secretary

My name is Nick Roberts.  I am 53 years old and am in my 25th year of flying paragliders and have been a member of the club since August 1990.  I have also been a committee member serving the club for most of that time.  Previously  club treasurer, I have now taken over the reins of club secretary  from Gerry Lawson   during whose  tenure the  club membership  slowly increased and I aim to help the  team keep it on that path by being an active club member and getting out on the hill as much as I can.

For my own flying,  I love to fly XC from any of our inland sites and still take great pleasure in an after work flight from the Brecon Beacons floating  out  over the valleys and gliding to  somewhere on the coast. I also enjoy flying the club tandem glider and aim to do more tandem  XC flying in the future.   I  also love flying abroad especially during the UK winter and have flown in many places around the world . When not flying, I keep active by  doing plenty of cycling, hill walking  or perhaps  a bit of juggling and unicycling with John Nash.

Goronwy Rhys Jones  (“Gron”)

Sites Officer

“Siwmai!”   As we say in Wales  ....... or ...... “ G’day!”   - as they say in OZ!   I’m Goronwy Rhys Jones, but when I lived in Australia for 4 years, the locals quickly abbreviated that to “GRON”, and that has stuck amongst many of my non Welsh speaking friends, and even a few speakers as well.

“ Rwy’n caru hedfan”................. : I love flying!!  If you’re on this web-site, then you feel the same!   I’m sure you’ve all discovered that flying is nothing less than a passion, and so well worth the blood, sweat and tears that go in to the long and challenging training process.   In my case, I think that passion must have started at the age of about eight or nine, when I first started to read books about aeroplanes, and became entranced.   I’m totally transfixed by anything that can fly, all kinds of manned flight, and also bird flight.

7/7/77 ......................What an easy date to remember!!  This was when I passed the “P1” test in hang-gliding (equivalent to the “Elementary Pilot” we have now).  In the first part of 1977, I had been tramping back and fore to the hills above Merthyr from my job as a Casualty Officer at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, - to the horror of all my doctor and nurse colleagues working there. ( Hang gliding used to make the headlines  for all the wrong reasons back then! )   You will understand how the used to call me “mad” – (many still do)!  The gliders were extremely primitive, called Rogallo wings, and were essentially triangular shaped sails in two billows either side of the keel pole.   (NB – there was NO paragliding then!)  It was such hard work trekking up and down the training slopes carrying these awesome things, but I’ll NEVER forget that first experience of rising air, when I did not just simply glide down the slope, but actually soared a little when going over a rise – fantastic!

I did not mange to continue free flying during the next 4 years, spent in Australia, but one year in the bush when I worked single handed with the Aboriginal population in the Kimberley region of far north west Western Australia, my flying urges were satisfied by being a Flying Doctor with the Royal Flying Doctor Service one day every week!

In the 80s, while raising a family and working crazy hours, I did some powered flying training at Fairwood common Airport, Swansea for quite a while.  In the 90s, I came to my senses when I saw a hang glider again, and that was enough!  Off I went to train properly, and got my EP and then CP with Tony and Rona Webb, on the towing winch, in the flatlands of Norfolk.  I loved driving around South Wales “posing” with the hang glider on the roof of the car!  Building a house, more crazy hours of work, and the family, meant not much flying in the late nineties,  then from 2000 onwards, I got in to paragliding, getting my CP with the French School “Les Passagers du Vent” in the Lake Annecy area – sheer bliss!   Since then, I  have paraglided on several European trips, including France,  Spain, Cyprus, Slovenia, and also further away, in Turkey, South Africa and Australia.

I qualified in Paramotoring with Paul Mahony of Mahony Aviation in 2009 out in Portugal, and discovered the joys of freedom from dependence on mountains to fly a paraglider wing, whilst at the same time, using far less fuel than driving around the countryside hoping for a flyable site.  A small band of paramotor pilots in the SWWSC is trying to get this branch of our incredible sport going in this part of the world, and we could do with a few more!

I gained my PPL in April 2011, and I fly an Escapade home built “very light aircraft” down at Haverfordwest  Aerodrome.  We are so lucky to have such magnificent countryside here in South Wales, and the best way to appreciate it .............................. is from the air, of course!

Contact me for any questions on paramotoring.

LAND SAFELY!  LAND WITH A SMILE!

MWYNHEWCH EICH HEDFAN – Enjoy your flying!
